American Hospital Association Annual Survey Database

Hello Everyone,
We are fortunate to be able to offer the American Hospital Association Annual Survey Database to the Boston College Community.
This database contains comprehensive hospital data from 6,500 hospitals surveyed about their operations. Topics include: demographics, organizational structure, facilities and services, utilization data, community orientation indicators, physician arrangements, managed care relationships and expenses.

The wealth of data will be of use to many subject areas besides the health care fields.
Social work, sociology, and education are interested in how health care affects people in the community and in the quality of their lives.
Psychologists would want to know what services are available in the psychiatric care units, both on an inpatient and outpatient basis.
The data can be used to track health care trends and inform health care policy proposals. The economic, financial and business aspects of health care are apparent. Communications and the media cover all of these aspects of health care data. The uses of this date are limitless.

AHA Annual Survey Database™ Fiscal Year 2009AHA Annual Survey DatabaseTM is an invaluable reference for market research reports and health care industry analysis on hospitals. Identify important health care trends with comprehensive hospital survey data including more than 800 data fields on 6,500 hospitals surveyed about their FY 2009 operations. New facility and service categories are added each year.

***The AHA Annual Survey Database (AHA ASD) CD-ROM has been loaded onto the GIS/Statistical Software computer B3 in the O’Neill Library EIC (this computer has SPSS and Stata already installed). A documentation manual describing the various data elements is available at the Reference Desk .
The License for Usage with Terms of Agreement is very strict. Only current members of the Boston College community may sign-up to use the AHA ASD at the O’Neill Library Reference Desk. Library staff staffing the Reference Desk will check to be sure that the person has a current Boston College ID. The person will then sign-up at the Reference Desk on the GIS/Statistical Software and AHA ASD sign-up sheet for B3, which will include a separate page with the following agreement, and a place for the signature and date to be entered:

1. Accepting the Terms by Health Forum LLC ( “HF”)
1.1 In order to use the Services, you must first agree to the Terms. You may not use the Services if you do not accept the Terms.
2.1 You can accept the Terms by:
(A) Signing below to accept or agree to the Terms, where this option is made available to you by HF through Annual Survey Database. You understand and agree that AHA will treat your use of the Services as acceptance of the Terms from that point onwards.
3. Use of the Services by you
3.1 Unless you have been specifically permitted to do so in a separate agreement with HF, you agree that you will not reproduce, duplicate, copy, sell, trade or resell the Services for any purpose.
4. Proprietary rights
4.1 You acknowledge and agree that AHA own all legal right, title and interest in and to the Services, including any intellectual property rights.

The Reference Desk Staff will then log-on the user to the AHA ASD software. Users will be asked to log off when finished with the AHA ASD database. Printing will follow the same directions as for GIS.

Statistical Data Catalog.

Through the additional funding provided by the Provost, the O’Neill Library has been able to add the Joanna Briggs Institute database

JBI COnNECT+ (Clinical Online Network of Evidence for Care and Therapeutics)

JBI COnNECT+ (Clinical Online Network of Evidence for Care and Therapeutics) provides access to resources to help the health care professional find and use evidence to inform clinical decision-making

• This database will add to our Evidence Based Nursing Resources. This resource consists of JBI databases (including the JBI Library of Systematic Reviews, Best Practice Information sheets, Evidence Summaries and Evidence Based Recommended Practices)
• There are basic and advanced searching capabilities
• Searching can also be done by “nodes” or areas of care

PubMed continues to add features that allow you to link to information and resources contained in other NCBI databases.
• A NEW Images Database will be linked to those citations that contain images in PubMed Central articles. If an article in PubMed Central contains images, thumbprints of several of the first images will display below the citation in the abstract view. A link to see all images will be available. In addition, mousing over the image will bring up a preview. The latest OECD* Health Data 2009 has a new look and interface which includes mapping and chart creation features. This resources is a comprehensive database including more than 1200 indicators on the health care systems of the OECD member countries. The interface includes easy download to spreadsheet formats.

CINAHL & MEDLINE Databases Changes

Two of our Nursing/Health Sciences databases will be changing interfaces due to changes in licensing by the publishers.
MEDLINE will be accessed by way of OvidSP. MEDLINE is the enhanced version of PubMed which is the major medical database in the USA. Many of you have used the OVID databases at your hospitals. The link to MEDLINE is through the Libraries Home Page link for Databases.

Following a five month study, it was decided that CINAHL, the nursing database, will be available through EBSCO's CINAHL PLUS database. Access is through the usual databases page on the BC Libraries Home Page.
An online EBSCO CINAHL SUPPORT CENTER, to help you learn how to get the most from CINAHL databases via the EBSCOhost interface has been set up at:

A demonstration of EBSCO's CINAHL PLUS will be arranged for Faculty next semester.

The topics available for analysis are vast. Here are just a few intriguing findings from data featured in the MDRC:

• Female slaves in the state of South Carolina were valued at nearly twice the dollar value as males.
• The Crow and Chippewa Tribe Family Size Suffered the Largest Decrease from 1885 to 1930.
• Non-Hispanic Black Children Most Likely to be Diagnosed with Asthma (2004).
• Hispanic Voters Experienced Difficulty Casting Votes (2002 mid-term elections).
• Hospital Admissions Vary by Race (2004).

Health informatics has become increasingly important over the past decade, and there are now publications and organizations devoted entirely to informatics in nursing. The American Nursing Informatics Association (http://ania.org) is a great place to start if you are interested in learning more about the role of informatics in nursing and finding educational, networking and job opportunities. Also check out the peer-reviewed Online Journal of Nursing Informatics (http://ojni.org).
Here in Boston, Northeastern University offers a Masters of Science in Health Informatics (http://healthinformatics.neu.edu/), and an MS in Biomedical Informatics is offered jointly through Harvard and MIT (http://hst.mit.edu/servlet/ControllerServlet?handler=PublicHandler&action=browse&pageId=129) for individuals who already have completed advanced study in the health sciences, such as a doctoral degree in nursing. There are also a number of online health informatics programs across the country (http://www.ania.org/Education.htm).

New OECD Interface and Expanded Content!

The new OECD interface, OECD.Stat Extracts, makes it easier to download large amounts of international data into Excel! This database now includes most of the OECD data in one data warehouse, including OECD Health Data, previously provided by the library on CD ROM.

Search by keyword or topics such as demographics, economic indicators, education, environment, health, industry and services, prices and purchasing parity, social and welfare, and more. You can also request regional and country statistical profiles.

Secondary Research Data Resources at BC- October 23, 2008

Boston College offers many sources and repositories of data for secondary research in the social sciences, education, nursing, economics, business and other disciplines. This workshop is particularly geared to researchers who need to access, analyze and manipulate data from BC's subscription data repositories. This tutorial will help you: find the data you need for your research or class project; learn about the Boston College collection of data resources in the Statistical Data Catalog; and how to download the data onto your desktop, including how to import into quantitative analytical tools such as SPSS. Get a tour of the Inter-University Consortium for Political and Social Research, a data archive that includes over 5,000 datasets. We will also discuss the library’s guides to key Business, Economics, Education, Health, and General U.S. and cross-national data sources. Topics may be customized based on attendees’ research interests.

ICPSR Health and Medical Care Archive

The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation in conjunction with ICPSR has launched their official data archive, ICPSR Health and Medical Care Archive, which is devoted to preserving and making available research data that have “significant secondary-analytic value for expanding knowledge on, and ultimately contributing to, improvement of the health of people in the United States.” Data categories include: Health Care Providers; Cost/Access to Health Care; Substance Abuse and Health and Chronic Health Conditions. Use your ICPSR account to download data.
