Topics include: demographics, organizational structure, facilities and services, utilization data, community orientation indicators, physician arrangements, managed care relationships and expenses.

The wealth of data will be of use to many subject areas besides the health care fields.
Social work, sociology, and education are interested in how health care affects people in the community and in the quality of their lives.
Psychologists would want to know what services are available in the psychiatric care units, both on an inpatient and outpatient basis.
The data can be used to track health care trends and inform health care policy proposals. The economic, financial and business aspects of health care are apparent. Communications and the media cover all of these aspects of health care data. The uses of this date are limitless.

Both Barbara Mento and ITS Research Services are available for assistance.
CSON Faculty, Students, and Staff please contact the CSON Nursing Research Office for further directions.
It would be beneficial to know if the AHA ASD data is used in any faculty or graduate student research or publications.
Thank you, Wanda and Barbara
***Please see access procedures below.

AHA Annual Survey Database™ Fiscal Year 2009AHA Annual Survey DatabaseTM is an invaluable reference for market research reports and health care industry analysis on hospitals. New facility and service categories are added each year.
You'll find healthcare information on:
• Demographics
• Organizational structure
• Facilities and services
• Utilization data
• Community orientation indicators
• Physician arrangements
• Managed care relationships
• Expenses
• Staffing
Using this database, you can:
• Extract structure and organizational information to compare and benchmark selected hospitals.
• Identify which services are delivered by a hospital or through another organization in the area.
• Evaluate opportunities for new service lines.
• Run time series analyses and develop forecasts with historical data sets since 1980.
• Merge with data from other sources for customized statistics and research.
• Study a hospital's self assessment of its community benefits.
• Analyze utilization information, staffing, expenses and other characteristics.

***The AHA Annual Survey Database (AHA ASD) CD-ROM has been loaded onto the GIS/Statistical Software computer B3 in the O’Neill Library EIC (this computer has SPSS and Stata already installed). A documentation manual describing the various data elements is available at the Reference Desk .
The License for Usage with Terms of Agreement is very strict. Only current members of the Boston College community may sign-up to use the AHA ASD at the O’Neill Library Reference Desk. Library staff staffing the Reference Desk will check to be sure that the person has a current Boston College ID. The person will then sign-up at the Reference Desk on the GIS/Statistical Software and AHA ASD sign-up sheet for B3, which will include a separate page with the following agreement, and a place for the signature and date to be entered:

1. Accepting the Terms by Health Forum LLC ( “HF”)
1.1 In order to use the Services, you must first agree to the Terms. You may not use the Services if you do not accept the Terms.
2.1 You can accept the Terms by:
(A) Signing below to accept or agree to the Terms, where this option is made available to you by HF through Annual Survey Database. You understand and agree that AHA will treat your use of the Services as acceptance of the Terms from that point onwards.
3. Use of the Services by you
3.1 Unless you have been specifically permitted to do so in a separate agreement with HF, you agree that you will not reproduce, duplicate, copy, sell, trade or resell the Services for any purpose.
4. Proprietary rights
4.1 You acknowledge and agree that AHA own all legal right, title and interest in and to the Services, including any intellectual property rights.

NAME DATE
1.
2.
3. etc.

The Reference Desk Staff will then log-on the user to the AHA ASD software. Users will be asked to log off when finished with the AHA ASD database. Printing will follow the same directions as for GIS.
The Online Catalog indicates

O’Neill Electronic Information Center as location. If an article in PubMed Central contains images, thumbprints of several of the first images will display below the citation in the abstract view. A link to see all images will be available. In addition, mousing over the image will bring up a preview. Read the Technical Bulletin for more information with screen shots about this new feature. http://www.nlm.nih.gov/pubs/techbull/so10/so10_pm_display_ncbi_images.html

The Images Database is searchable on its own as well. Check it out here: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/images. It is included in the list of databases from the drop down menus in PubMed and NCBI resources.
Remember that Copyright Restrictions may still apply to materials found in PubMed Central. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/about/copyright.html

• Also, please note that PubMed is in its annual “Year-End Processing” where changes to citations are being made to conform with 2011 version of MeSH and other changes. This means that NLM temporarily suspends the addition of fully-indexed MEDLINE citations.
Background Information: http://www.nlm.nih.gov/bsd/policy/yep_background.html
Impact on Searching: http://www.nlm.nih.gov/bsd/policy/yep_activities.html

Other additions to PubMed include:

• A Books & Documents indicator displays below citations where a link to the Free Text from the NCBI Bookshelf is available.
• Enhanced My Bibliography: A selection for My Bibliography has been added to the Send to menu in PubMed. Access to the mobile site is included as an added benefit of current subscriptions. You will be automatically redirected to m.psychiatryonline.com when visiting the main PsychiatryOnline.com site from a wireless-enabled mobiledevice (such as a smartphone or PDA).Before your first mobile visit, be sure to create a free personal “My PsychiatryOnline” account. To create an account, go to www.psychiatryonline.com from a desktop or laptop computer while authenticated by your institutional subscription, click the “My PsychiatryOnline” link from the homepage, and fol! low the instructions for creating an account. (IP-based recognition is not possible from mobile devices, and accounts cannot be created from the mobile site.) The mobile site will prompt users who haven’t yet created My PsychiatryOnline accounts with these instructions.Content AvailableMost mobile browsers are limited in their ability to transmit large files quickly, so only the most essential information is included in the mobile version of PsychiatryOnline. Search and navigation are simplified as well, to better suit the small mobile screen (e.g., the “related content” links usually seen at the left of content have been removed to unclutter the screen). MEDLINE is the enhanced version of PubMed which is the major medical database in the USA. Many of you have used the OVID databases at your hospitals. The link to MEDLINE is through the Libraries Home Page link for Databases.
An OvidSP tutorial is available at
http://www.ovid.com/site/help/tutorials_ovidsp/searchPage_demo20080208/searc hPage_demo20080208_900.htm

Following a five month study, it was decided that CINAHL, the nursing database, will be available through EBSCO's CINAHL PLUS database. Access is through the usual databases page on the BC Libraries Home Page.
An online EBSCO CINAHL SUPPORT CENTER, to help you learn how to get the most from CINAHL databases via the EBSCOhost interface has been set up at:
http://support.ebscohost.com/cinahl/

A demonstration of EBSCO's CINAHL PLUS will be arranged for Faculty next semester.
There will be a demonstration of CINAHL PLUS for the library staff on Tuesday, Jan. 13 at 10AM in O'Neill 307. The American Nursing Informatics Association (http://ania.org) is a great place to start if you are interested in learning more about the role of informatics in nursing and finding educational, networking and job opportunities. Also check out the peer-reviewed Online Journal of Nursing Informatics (http://ojni.org).
Here in Boston, Northeastern University offers a Masters of Science in Health Informatics (http://healthinformatics.neu.edu/), and an MS in Biomedical Informatics is offered jointly through Harvard and MIT (http://hst.mit.edu/servlet/ControllerServlet?handler=PublicHandler&action=browse&pageId=129) for individuals who already have completed advanced study in the health sciences, such as a doctoral degree in nursing. There are also a number of online health informatics programs across the country (http://www.ania.org/Education.htm).
Becky DeAngelis
Science Librarian Intern
O'Neill Library
Boston College
deangere@bc.edu

New OECD Interface and Expanded Content!

The new OECD interface, OECD.Stat Extracts, makes it easier to download large amounts of international data into Excel! This workshop is particularly geared to researchers who need to access, analyze and manipulate data from BC's subscription data repositories. This tutorial will help you: find the data you need for your research or class project; learn about the Boston College collection of data resources in the Statistical Data Catalog; and how to download the data onto your desktop, including how to import into quantitative analytical tools such as SPSS. Get a tour of the Inter-University Consortium for Political and Social Research, a data archive that includes over 5,000 datasets. We will also discuss the library’s guides to key Business, Economics, Education, Health, and General U.S. and cross-national data sources. Topics may be customized based on attendees’ research interests.

Co-instructors: Rani Dalgin, ITS Research Services and Barabara Mento, Data/GIS Librarian

To sign up for a tutorial, please send email to researchservices@bc.edu with the name of the tutorial.

For more ITS Research Services tutorials Fall 2008 see:

http://www.bc.edu/offices/researchservices/tutorials.html <o p=""></o>

<o p="">
</o>

Welcome to a New academic Year

Hello to All of You ----Faculty, Students, and Staff!
Welcome to a New Academic Year!
In your adventure of new programs, faculty and colleagues, please remember you can count on the librarians and staff in the libraries to provide services and resources for your classes, clinicals and research.
Two important initiatives for this Academic Year are first, the search for a nursing database to replace our current version of CINAHL through SilverPlatter. SilverPlatter will not be published after 12/31/2008.
We are exploring:
OvidSP's Nursing@OVID (our current provider of CINAHL) (contact anderswb@bc.edu about access)
EBSCO's CINAHL http://web.ebscohost.com/ehost/search?vid=1&hid=104&sid=0935b0c8-e206-4a95-b709-9727e2c109c8%40sessionmgr108

Proquest Nursing & Allied Health Source http://proquest.umi.com/pqdweb?RQT=302&cfc=1

and Elsevier's MOSBY'S Nursing index http://www.mosbysnursingindex.com/ (contact anderswb@bc.edu for Mosby's username & password).

Secondly we are in the beginning stages of exploring e-books as a future format for some Nursing Reference Books. Any input about the usability/desirability of this format is welcome.

Rani Dalgin & Barbara Mento are offering some wonderful Research and Information Technology Services tutorials on data analysis, surveys and GIS (Geographic Information Services).
